6th – 10th December 2021 We had kept enough off our Schengen 90 days to visit Calliope at least once during the winter, and despite Covid rules both sides of the chan new requiring several tests each we decided to go. So with the ‘leaving UK’ PCR test accomplished and negative results received we wereContinue reading “A winter visit”

The Longer Way Home
Tournai to Kortrijk, via Gent 24th September to 5th October 2021 plus a week in Kortrijk We were sad to be losing our visitor Hugh, but taxi companies at the next places up the river were less than co-operative, and with his luggage Hugh was not keen on using a series of buses to getContinue reading “The Longer Way Home”
Late summer in Belgium part 1
July 28 to August 5th 2021 If you have been following the Calliope blog you will know that we were stuck in the UK well past our normal April return to the boat, and when the usual cruising season begins. At first we more concerned about the Brexit effect than anything Covid related, wondering howContinue reading “Late summer in Belgium part 1”
The long Covid winter
Well it is now nine months and six days since we left our lovely Calliope secured for the winter in Kortrijk on the river Leie. We had expected it to be for six months and nine days, not the other way round! However the various twists and turns of Covid-19 have made it difficult toContinue reading “The long Covid winter”

Bringing the good news from Kortrijk to Gent and Brugges
Kortrijk is a good place to take on new crew and entertain them. We had son and grandson with us for a few days and managed to fit in swimming, paddle boarding, a summer night market, the Trench of Death and a football match at Lille! And although Calliope never left the pontoon we didContinue reading “Bringing the good news from Kortrijk to Gent and Brugges”
The Upper Lys, Leie and Mitoeyenne
15 – 24 August 2019 We returned to the boat in Kortrijk on August 13th, full of fatigue after a week of long road trips and an excellent South of France party weekend. There was 10 days to fill until our next family visitors arrived in Kortrijk so we set out for a short andContinue reading “The Upper Lys, Leie and Mitoeyenne”
Moving on to Kortrijk- along the Upper Scheldt and Kanaal Bossuit-Kortrijk
10 – 12 July 2019 I am going to try to bring brevity into this edition. It is after all only 3 days long. At 7.40am we turned into the Upper Scheldt, known as the Haut Escaut at its other end in France. We had been surprised at 6.30am to find we were going downContinue reading “Moving on to Kortrijk- along the Upper Scheldt and Kanaal Bossuit-Kortrijk”
A river and three canals in a week!
Well not exactly complete rivers or canals, but we did steam along 53 kms of the Base Sambre river, 20kms of the Canal Charleroi à Brussels, and 24 kms of the Canal de Centre and 40kms of the Canal Nimy-Blaton-Péronnes And that included an unplanned en panne two night stop, but more of that later.Continue reading “A river and three canals in a week!”
